Business Basics
Some things to bear in mind:
• The next time you hear a human resources person ask for a result rather than a deliverable, check your blood alcohol level.
• The average article posted on LinkedIn is titled something like this: “Six Reasons Why You Can’t Follow the Normal Six Reasons to Run Meetings.”
• Culture consists of those beliefs which govern behavior. Culture will not change if the beliefs do not change. (Ergo, “lip service.”)
• No ethical person endorses a book which they haven’t read at least in draft form and is written by someone they don’t know.
• Are we any more emotionally intelligent today? Did any of that hoopla really matter in the long run?
• I shut down when someone says something like, “I want to provide impetus in the change management space.”
• The average Facebook post seems to be about illness, surgery, hospitals, and trauma complete with a pictorial history. We don’t even value our own privacy any more.
• With the proper credentials, you may well know more than I about the law or topography or entomology. But to think your political view and philosophy are superior to mine merely because they’re yours is the height of self-absorption.
• Some people aren’t content merely winning. They insist that you also lose. This is due to highly damaged self-esteem.
• I’ve found that those who are most successful have learned to say “No” without guilt, fear, or the need to justify the decision.
