I once asked the president of the American Psychological Association why the rate of suicide was so high among psychologists (second at the time to dentists). He told me that the profession draws troubled people looking to resolve their own issues. They are somewhat more “damaged” than the general population. His words, not mine.
As I look through people trying to “befriend” me on Facebook—I no longer just mechanically accept, since there are so many lunatics ranting on social media—I’ve noticed a disproportionate number of them are running some kind of motivational group: The Empowerment Endeavor, View Your Own Greatness, The Accomplishment Advisor. And then I see a lot of self-congratulatory photos, platitudinous quotes, and videos of people who look like they just awoke, with ratty tee shirts and hair in their eyes, giving ridiculous advice.
I recall a self-proclaimed psychic who asked if the woman with me was my wife. “Shouldn’t you know that?” my wife asked.
You know….who are you getting help from? If the ski instructor keeps falling on his face, I might just ask about his credentials.
