Life Lessons

In case you missed this day in school:

• Always let the dogs take the stairs first. Otherwise, you’ll trip over the small ones and the big ones will just knock you down.

• To parallel park, back up until the tail light on your (driver’s) side is approximately even with the driver’s side headlight of the car behind you, then cut the wheel the other way. (Yes, it works on either side of the street.)

• To provide a 20% tip. simply take 10% of the total bill (you do this by removing the last number), and double the total. An $85 bill would be $8 times 2: $16. Don’t try to subtract tax and so forth, it’s minor. Make sure a gratuity isn’t already included.

• Don’t start eating until everyone at your table has been served. If the meals ordered are served cold, it makes no difference. If they are served hot, and the host (or someone not yet served) says, “Please start so your food doesn’t get cold,” you can start. If there is a delay of more than two minutes, you’re in a lousy restaurant.

• If you purchase Starbuck’s coffee to go, and take it into a diner where you’re going to sit and order breakfast, and the staff throws you out the door, down the steps, and out into the street, just crawl away, you have no case. There is no crime for punishing self-absorption.
