No Normal®

No Normal®

I’ve talked about the fact that we’re in No Normal® and not a “return to normal” or a “new normal.” The word “normal” means “typical” or “average.” Do you want to be typical and average?

We need to prevent a “regression toward the mean.” Regression toward the mean simply explains that, following an extreme random event, the next random event is likely to be less extreme. We have to keep innovating, keep growing, and avoid a slow drift (or steep decline) down to “average” and “normal.” Don’t be content with how things are going, ask how they can be improved. If no one asked that question, there would be no Uber or Amazon or Apple—or automatic garage door openers.

About 75% of my income originates from offerings that didn’t exist five years ago, historically. It also helps to have a low threshold for boredom.
