Platidutinally Speaking

Platidutinally Speaking

All over social media people post “profound” statements (platitudes) usually uttered by a long-dead person to try to demonstrate A) some eternal wisdom, and B) the fact that they’re “aligned” with a great thinker of sorts. The platitude is just blindly accepted, as in, “People are too judgmental,” whereas that statement itself is judgmental, and we’re all “paid” to use our judgment, some of which is better than others.

Here’s a quote I love, because of its honesty:

“Better it is for philosophy to err in active participation in the living struggles of its own age and times than to maintain an immense monastic impeccability…saints engage in introspection while burly sinners run the world.”

Of course, that’s John Dewey, another dead guy, but I think he was on to something. We need to recognize the reality and imperfections and unfairness of our times, and get in the trenches and work on them, and not observe and comment and pontificate from “above.”
