RIO: Rhode Island Oddities

RIO: Rhode Island Oddities

Rhode Island is more a state of the mind than a state of the union.

It has snowed in these parts for at least 10,000 years. Yet every winter, a disproportionate amount of time is spent by the media on snow, as if it’s Haley’s Comet showing up unexpectedly. They even harken back to past storms, although many people here weren’t even born “during the blizzard of ’76.”

Nonetheless, here’s what going on this morning, while it’s snowing:

• People are driving without lights on, even though it’s a state law to do so.

• People think their SUVs are combination tractors and tanks, drive them recklessly, and get into more accidents than anyone else driving rear-wheel drive vehicles.

• People are stocking up in stores—bread, milk, water, gas, batteries, generators, booze—as if they’ll be holed-up for a decade. By this afternoon, the streets will be plowed and fine.

There are more “meteorologists” on the four network affiliates up here than there are street reporters. And the street reporters are usually talking about—the weather.

I know when I tell people about some of the snow storms we used to get folks roll their eyes with that ‘here we go again.’ But, there is something to be said for the “put your trash cans out in October, and find them in April.” We got some big ones, but Buffalo and Watertown, they got snow
