Scams don’t just arise from individuals hoping to take advantage of others. Here’s a social media ad from a major investment house which also advertises widely on TV:

This is pure nonsense. You’re not going to conventionally retire in the US with just $500,000 in the bank unless you continue to have income from other sources or you intend to lead an extremely modest life. And, in fact, if you consider the flawed math underlying social security and medicare, and inflation, and likely higher taxes that will be required to fund political entitlements and service the huge national debt, well, this kind of advertising in my book is simply a scam. Frankly, urging anyone to fully “retire” these days is a denial or social and economic reality.
