The Fifty-Cent Outrage

The Fifty-Cent Outrage

I read on social media that someone was enraged because a restaurant had assessed a fifty-cent charge on the bill for an order of extra cheese to sprinkle on the food. The total bill was $124.

It strikes me that to complain about fifty cents on a $124 bill is the apotheosis of a poverty mentality. Small businesses have a real struggle to survive and even the cheese jar runs out and has to be repurchased.

But larger than that is the commentary on our society where we find fault with everyone else, and we’re all prepared to be oppressed, persecuted, and then entitled. The original reaction isn’t to simply pay a bill, it’s to check it and condemn the restaurant owners for a trivial charge. We have completely lost the ability to give the other person the benefit of the doubt.

And, apparently, we all feel we’re so “special” that everyone must acknowledge our unhappiness at all times.

I’m guessing that if we’re become supremely self-absorbed, we’ll eventually implode.
