The Small Print from Small Minds

The Small Print from Small Minds

We joke about the “small print” in warnings and instructions, and idiotic admonitions such as “do not place batteries in your mouth.” Dumb legalities are like glue in the works, slowing everything down. Worse, they are so “symbolically rendered” in true small print and nanosecond warnings on the TV screen that they are senseless and insulting.

On everything from pool chemicals to pharmaceuticals, the warnings are in far greater volume than the actual directions or dosages. On TV you can't read the small print that probably says the lawyer in the ad wasn't really a lawyer, or the testimonials are generated with “compensation.” The converse of this are the ubiquitous, musical, dumb drug ads where the voiceover casually announces that side effects may include loss of feeling in limbs, incontinence, and ongoing thoughts of suicide, as if these were as mundane as a rash or itch.

The Founding Fathers were afraid of too great an agricultural dominance in Congress. But they knew the farmers had to go home for planting and harvests. They never dreamed of a dominance by lawyers, who don't have anything to do but make, and circumvent, rules and regulations.
