The Association Fallacy

The Association Fallacy

Have you noticed that in most cases local chapter meetings of national professional organizations are declining in attendance, frequency, duration, guest speakers, and so forth? That’s because offering 12 monthly newsletters/magazines and a national convention aren’t sufficient to provide value to people who have so many more options to gain value in these times. Many of the associations look as if they’ve been transported here directly from the 1950s!

Associations aren’t about “giving everyone a chance” to speak, or be an officer, or write a column. They should be about bringing the best possible examples and exemplars to the membership, in actuality or remotely. If the association can’t market itself, how can it teach members to market?

And most conventions and chapter meetings are just an excuse to bring everyone together to lie about how well they’re doing!
