I enjoy “spectacle”—fireworks on July 4th, Super Bowl halftime shows (some of them)—but there has to be some kind of intrinsic value, such as artistry, entertainment, insight, and so forth. The opening of the Winter Olympics in Italy—a country famous for great art and culture—seemed to be created merely for spectacle itself. It was huge, unique…..and boring. There was no quality about it, no relevance, just size and sound and numbers of people.

Maybe, of course, I'm just not that deep. Or shallow.
