Crabs

Crabs

From an infinity pool, I lean over and watch the waves batter the rocks below. The stratigraphy is fascinating, hundreds of crevices and nooks, a combination of cork brown and golf course green.

I catch some movement, and I realize that dozens of crabs are scuttling and sidling along the rocks. They are the same colors as their surroundings, but the water makes them an almost iridescent hue. Some fit into the cracks, but the larger ones must stay on the surface.

The water pounds them but they do not surrender to the tides. There must be tasty morsels carried in by the waves and the crabs hold their positions, sailors on a windswept deck, holding fast, ceding under no breeze, to capture their food.

We all need to become adept at success in the environment in which we find ourselves. it does the crab no good to try to live in the hotel to escape the waves, or to give up when too big to fit in the protected declivities, or to protest the incessant water.

They have learned to thrive. So should we all.
