The Issue Is Where You Get Wet

The Issue Is Where You Get Wet

I remember a New Yorker cartoon from many years ago in which the interviewer and the interviewee, sitting across the desk from each other, looked exactly alike. The interviewer was saying, “I don’t know what it is about you, but I really like you!”

Over the years as I’ve created thousands of small teams during workshop experiences, I’ve found that some people actually run to be with people they already know, people like them, instead of being willing to be a “stranger” in a new group. I recall people from a Boston chapter planning to get together in Los Angeles at a convention in order to have meals together, even though there were people present from several countries!

People would rather be in comfortable in their small pool than uncomfortable and learning in a larger one (or even just a new one). If you’re confident and feel good about yourself, you can comfortably swim anywhere, even with the sharks.
