Podcasting

Podcasting

I have a weekly podcast, The Uncomfortable Truth®, and I’m also interviewed by podcasters weekly. Here are my guidelines for podcasts that are engaging to your listeners (I’m going to skip the obvious, like a good mic on both sides, no ambient noise, etc.):

• Choose a guest who can add value to your audience and isn’t merely trying to sell something or build his or her brand.

• Do your homework and prepare some pithy questions. I don’t like to provide (or receive) questions in advance because the responses sound “scripted” and are too vanilla.

• Ask a question, don’t make a speech. The main problem I’ve found with interviewers is that they want to promote themselves even though, ostensibly, they audience is there to hear me.

• Keep questions brief so that you can ask more of them.

• If your interviewees ramble, or make their own speech, interrupt them. Simply say, “Excuse me for interrupting, but I want to follow up on something you said a few seconds ago….”

• Release your podcasts on the same day at the same time weekly or monthly or whatever. Have them appear in the maximum number of places.

• It’s best to have a photo, bio, and “show notes” of your interview guests accompany the podcast.

• For what it’s worth, I use the audio track on Zoom with a concurrent backup on Garage Band. Who knows, someday I might get permission to use excerpts from all those videos.
