No Shine, No Tie, No Paper?

No Shine, No Tie, No Paper?

We were in Charlotte yesterday changing planes to come here to Las Vegas, and I noticed an old-time shoe shine place with three men awaiting customers for six seats. I realized I don’t even see single shoe shine men anymore, and then I watched the crowd. Everyone had on running shoes, flip-flops, sandals, sneakers, and so on. (Along with torn jeans, torn shirts, sweat suits, and the like.) Societal change affects people in different ways. The one customer in the shoe shine shop was an airline pilot.

Even in restaurants, it’s uncommon to see men with traditional leather shoes. I have 50 ties in my closet with the need to wear a tie probably twice a year. What are your clients sustaining that simply doesn’t justify the expense in changing times?

Newspapers are in bad shape and they’ve never done anything about the prospect of losing automobile advertising, which would pretty much doom 90% of all the remaining ones.
