Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 11/02/2026
About 80 percent of the nations in the world hold elections. But only about 40 percent of those are honest and uncontested. In the last midterm elections, just under half of all eligible American voters cast a vote.
It is a privilege to vote. The Founding Fathers, ever-mindful of a “tyranny of the majority” did not favor a direct democracy but rather a representative one, where we elect people to govern in the best interests of their constituents. Alexis de Toqueville, the French nobleman who was so impressed with post-revolution America, wrote about this in Democracy in America in 1835 and 1840 (two volumes). He also made the prediction that someday there would be only two great powers in the world, the United States and Russia, which came true about a century later.
I neither believe in mandatory voting with penalties if you don’t vote, nor rewarding voting with benefits if you do. Over 20 countries require voting with fines for not doing so ranging from small to large, withdrawal of driving privileges, and a ban on banking transactions. And, in all candor, a great many people today do receive rewards for voting, commonly referred to as “patronage.”
My undergraduate degree and first master’s degree were in political science, and I became a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science and Government Honor Society in 1968. I learned that governments existed with the consent of the governed. But how could that be the case, I wondered, when there were so many tyrannical regimes brutalizing people?
It’s because no one stopped them from taking power, and no one resisted their taking power after the fact. But there are exceptions. Washington, San Martin, Bolivar. Zapata, Mandela, Garibaldi, and others led people who demanded change. Lincoln, Churchill, Roosevelt were elected leaders who resisted attempts at tyrannical global revolutions.
But the “governed” have to support their views, oppose radicalism, and defend everyone’s freedoms, not just those they govern.
Get out and vote tomorrow if you haven’t already in the US. This country has saved the free world. It can certainly save itself. But heed this: We all get the kind of government we deserve.
There is no doubt of the genius of the Founding Fathers who created a government still functioning 250 years later which has, unfortunately, occasionally been run by idiots.
