Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 04/11/2022

Alan Weiss's Monday Morning Memo

Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 04/11/2022

Simply stated, cognitive dissonance is the discomfort in the perception of contradictory information, especially about statements in conflict with each other or with observed behavior.

Thus, the leader says, “Customers are our most important asset,” but refuses to speak to any customers. The general gives a speech about bravery and honor, but stays in the rear while others lead the troops into enemy fire. The “motivational speaker” urges you to take control of your life but is 50 pounds overweight, out of shape, and is seen chain-smoking.

It’s the politician demanding strict adherence to quarantine protocols but visiting a hair stylist in private, or forbidding public gatherings while hosting a 100-person birthday party for their child.

We abhor road rage but sometime engage in it ourselves. We excoriate cheaters, but find ways to evade taxes or “pull strings” to get our kid into a private school or score rare concert tickets.

My father used to resolve this obvious discomfort, because I was pointing out things he had done that I was forbidden to do, by admonishing me with, “Do as I say, not as I do!” As you might have concluded, I found that less than satisfying.

We’re quick to point out cognitive dissonance in others, but we often fail to recognize the stress it creates when we, ourselves, are engaged in conflicting thoughts and behaviors. “I can’t stand violence, but I’d love to smack that person!” (Henceforth known as “Will Smith Syndrome.”) “That person is cutting the line!” (but of course I bribed the concierge to get these tickets).

Palm Sunday was yesterday and Easter is next week, and Passover begins on Good Friday. This parable stands in good stead in the secular world as well as the religious one, and I’ll paraphrase it: Are you really in a position to throw the first stone?

Hypocrisy is the homage vice pays to virtue. —François VI, Duc de La Rochefoucauld

Hypocrisy is not a way of getting back to the moral high ground. Pretending you’re moral, saying you’re moral is not the same as acting morally. —Alan Dershowitz

Hypocrisy needs to be called out in American politics, and the absurd has reached the point where it

is just insufferable. —Ana Navarro
