Alan at Eighty. Well, who would have thunk it?

I'm going to share some reactions about this without being maudlin or pretentious, just honest.

I lettered in sprinting in school, but I’m not about to do that anymore. However, I still have all my original joints, appendix, and tonsils. And I know when I walk into a room I’m still likely the smartest guy in it. I know how that sounds, but recently I was talking to the president of a university whom I know and who’s a year younger than I. He said, “Alan, I can’t say this to many people, but every year I feel smarter and smarter!”

Tom Stoppard, the great playwright, said, “Age is such a high price to pay for maturity.” But perhaps it’s the sole route to get there.

You know my lifestyle, I’ve been around. I want the best, which doesn’t necessarily mean the most expensive, because I don’t use money as my sole metric for the best. I realize how blessed I am, and that the harder I’ve worked, the “luckier” I’ve become. I wasn’t born on third base, this ain’t my daddy’s money, but I am rounding third, running like crazy, and though I’ll be tagged out at home it will be with a tremendous crash and dirt and rocks flying everywhere.

My advice for you is simple:

    • Find love and nurture it. Love yourself.

       • Age and aging are two very different conditions.

       • Follow your passion and make money from it, not vice-versa.

       • Build a “body of work” so everyone relevant knows of you.

       • Control whatever you possibly can and stop complaining.

Life is not about searching for meaning, it’s about creating our own meaning. I started doing that a long time ago. If you haven’t yet, begin now.
