Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 10/1/12

October 1, 2012—Issue #158

This week’s focus point: I was watching a British Airways mechanic trying to restart a small luggage truck at Heathrow Airport. He opened the engine compartment and started looking around. He reached for a light, and then looked into places he couldn’t see before. He was checking to see if things looked the way he knew they should or whether something was clearly amiss. Finally, he reached for a tool, made a few adjustments, and told the driver to start the engine. He closed the compartment, and the truck went back to its job. Let’s not make consulting into rocket science. We ought to look around, find out if something is operating the way we know it should, then use the right tool to make the proper adjustments. You need to know where to look; shed some light; know how things should work; have the right tools; and firmly and quickly make the adjustments. You don’t need a certification to be a consultant. You just need to be smart and apply common sense.
