Chateau Eza

Chateau Eza

We took a car to Èze last night in France, and dined at the Chateau Eza. The limo climbs up cobblestone streets and hairpin turns from the village below until the end of the road, at which point we “climbed” over a hundred yards through the mountaintop village to the Chateau.

The surrounding one-time fortress held back foes in the 1500s. The streets this time of year were totally deserted, a trip back through time as we traveled the narrow alleys. The chateau’s restaurant is small and incredible, with champagne offered in a lounge with a fireplace, and then a table for dinner with a breathtaking view of the Côte d’Azur far below. The building dates from 800.

Our amuse bouche was, amazingly, a crème brulee fois gras, and the meal ended with a banana soufflé with coconut ice cream. The entrees of lobster and lamb were accompanied by a nice Cotes du Rhone.  Fortunately, the return was downhill!

Lovely area, we lived in Grasse – up the Route Napolean from Cannes – for 2 years and spent many hours wandering the little villages such as Eze, Gourdon and those across the Italian border…
