Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 8/6/12

August 6, 2012—Issue #150

This week’s focus point: The Olympics demonstrate that victory is often by a hundredth of a second, or a single point, or a few centimeters. The victors are able to generate their best performance at exactly the time it’s required, under the greatest pressure, and against the strongest competition. Some people thrive in that environment (“Give me the ball!”) and others wither (“Please, not me!”). The winners are usually characterized by very fast starts, stamina in the middle, and strong reserves at the finish. That’s not a bad approach to business or life. But keep it in perspective. Although only three competitors receive medals at each Olympic event, there’s nothing wrong with being the eighth best in the world!

Monday Morning Perspective: There are two equally dangerous extremes, to shut reason out and to let nothing else in. — Blaise Pascal

I remember a meeting with a boutique consulting firm that had fallen on hard times. The debate was whether or not to sell their magnificent conference table. “Where would clients sit?” asked one partner. “We have no clients,” stated the advocate of selling. You can’t cut your way to renewal or success. Top line growth is the key to bottom line achievement, for you and for your clients. Today is the time to invest in the future. Once you cut muscle, you’re powerless.
