China Journal

The sun is up! It’s about 50° F, and we leave in an hour for The Great Wall. This appears to be a good omen.

We dined at 1949 Duck du Chine last night, and it was packed, about 85% Chinese, 15% American was my guess. The chef prepares the duck at table side, after the waiter alerts the place with a gong (constant gonging all evening). The waiter then prepares the delicate crepe with sauce and a few radishes, then the duck and skin. Out of this world.

The paradoxes here are amazing—high level of not just westernized but Americanized products and services (7-Eleven), very expensive luxury goods (Ferrari, Bulgari, Fendi, Cartier), and fine food, coupled with inability to reach the “outside” world in certain aspects, and a grimness that seems to underlie things (which I’ve never seen in Hong Kong). I’ll report in about 12 hours on our trip today.
