Downhill

Downhill

When I learned to ski, I became proficient on the green (easy) hills. But then I started to fall regularly. Frustrated at the bottom, I jumped on the wrong lift and went to the top of a blue (intermediate) hill. I was worried, but paid close attention and skied without any falls. The reason, of course, was that I had grown accustomed to the easy hills and stopped paying close attention (conscious competency) and had lapsed into inattention (unconscious competency). On the blue hills I was paying attention again.

Moderate stress doesn't impede performance, it aids it. Lack of stress (boredom and apathy) are what diminish performance.

If you want to do something well, make it challenging and pay attention. If your job can't provide that, get out and find a new one.
