Embarked at Nuremberg

Embarked at Nuremberg

We’re on the Viking Atla, which will depart Nuremberg tomorrow. Our suite is at the aft of the boat, with a wrap-around balcony, living room, heated bathroom floor and every convenience. We’ll be on board for seven nights, ending in Budapest (I’m half-Hungarian).

This is a relief from our one night at the Meridien Hotel in Nuremberg, the sole good feature of which is that it’s adjacent to the Old Town, and we could walk everywhere. They employ only one bellman at a time, the suites are dingy, and the service is, unfortunately, what I’ve come to think of as “European normal”: Why are you annoying me, I have work to do?

I left my camera in the limo which took us to the boat, and 30 minutes later the driver returned with it and it was delivered by a crew member. It pays to tip well. (I’ve found out that European limo drivers receive very little of the “gratuity” included in the billing.)

The boat’s hotel manager showed us to our suite, everyone couldn’t be more cordial and helpful, and the first thing I did was make sure we had the special liquor package, which means all of the highest-end liquor is free for the trip. I was immediately introduced to the bartender!
