Free Griping

Free Griping

I’ve found that people receiving something for free are more demanding than people who are paying for a service or product! There seems to be a bizarre sense of entitlement that accompanies the “freebie.”

When I’ve spoken pro bono for many association chapters, I’ve sometimes been treated very cavalierly, had demands made in terms of my timing or content, and been treated rudely by chapter officers who insist all attention be focused on them. But when someone is paying me $35,000 for a speech of even shorter duration, they can’t do enough for me to ensure I’m comfortable, and ask what conditions I’ll need for the best results.

I’ve had people “threaten” me that they’ll cancel a free subscription to one of my newsletters because the don’t like my point of view! It’s hard to imagine a lower level of intelligence. With my paid subscription offerings, people offer me respectful, differing opinions and ask insightful questions.

I think when people don’t have “skin in the game” they feel they can simply sound off. Of course, when you don’t have skin in the game you can’t win the game and that sound is just background noise.

Exactly Jeffrey! Social media attracts all levels of awful. I really prefer paid private groups.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s like people who ask you what number iPhone you have…no idea, the latest I believe.

At pro bono talks, I’ve had attendees offended b/c I didn’t eat the lunch…

    Detachment, detachment, detachment…

Oh my! Offended because you didn’t eat the lunch. Yikes. You said it René — detachment. And to that I would add my other favorite word … Next. 🙂

Just proves once again that’s there’s no such thing as a free lunch.
