Freedom and Liberty

Freedom and Liberty

Does the irony strike anyone that the US is celebrating its independence, achieved nearly 240 years ago, with an unbroken string of successive, elected governments running the country—and the Egyptian army has just booted out after just one year the single democratically elected president in that country’s 5,000-year existence?

In close and contested elections, the worst we have are lawyers threatening lawsuits and largely peaceful protestors in the streets, all of which is managed by the courts and police. In Egypt (and in most places), it’s not unusual to see tanks in the streets. Arrest warrants are fluttering all over Egypt right now.

If we learn nothing else from celebrating the date, hitting the beach, and stuffing ourselves with food, it should be that we should never take for granted this rare experiment still protecting and invigorating us after 2.5 centuries.

Happy Independence Day Weekend!
