Here’s A Tip

Here’s A Tip

I'm a big tipper for appropriate service, I believe people have a right to earn living, and our society is about tipping. But when a woman walks over to the register so I can pay for my coffee, and I tap my credit card, and the screen asks if I'd like to leave a 15%-25% tip for her taking my money, and she's staring at the screen, I have no problem hitting “no tip.” Nor do I when I contribute online to a charity and the collection page asks if I'd like to leave a “tip” for the automated collection of my money by a third party.

What's next? Do we tip the cop giving us a parking ticket or the baggage handlers at the airport?

At a movie theater here there used to be a folk singer who played guitar and sang before the show. He was dreadful, off key, and horrible. When he was done he'd pass a battered, empty coffee cardboard cup around. I wanted to take money OUT of it, but my wife wouldn't let me.
