Hypocrisy

Hypocrisy

Hypocrisy is built into society. I was telling someone over cigars the other day about the speed of my cars and their acceleration. I realize, of course, that would never (and could never on most roads) drive the cars at their top speed or accelerate at their top performance, either. Yet the auto makers promote what is basically unlawful use of their products. For that matter, I was smoking a cigar because tobacco is legal in a society where we know that tobacco causes cancer in many cases. The CVS drug chain has removed tobacco products but not high sugar candies and drinks, which we know are detrimental to good health and leading causes of obesity. And for that matter, CVS and other drug chains irresponsibly provided opioid drugs that killed and sickened hundreds of thousands of people. Purdue provided these harmful drugs knowing of their harm, but reached a financial settlement with the government which avoided any jail time for the family members who oversaw and perpetuated the crime.

Why are we surprised when politicians say one thing and do another or act strictly for their personal gain? Hypocrisy is like gum on the soles of our shoes. We don’t see it, yet we know it’s there, but it’s too much of a mess to try to remove. We hope it removes itself while we step in more gum.
