I’m Underwhelmed by “Overwhelm”

“Overwhelm” is a state of mind, not a fact of life. It means “to inundate” or “to have too much of something.” But who determines how much is “too much”?

I spoke to a prospect recently who told me she was in a “state of overwhelm” and couldn’t possibly choose something to begin work on. I asked her to list what was “overwhelming” her. I chose one of the eight issues at random and said, “Let’s start here.”

“I don’t know if that’s the right place to start,” she said.

“I don’t, either,” I replied, “but it IS a start, the resolution will help, and then we’ll move on to another. Your option is to simply do nothing, and your list will eventually grow to suffocate you.”

She’s now a client.
