Some people are so successful that they become self-absorbed and tone-deaf to the world around them. Pinchas Zuckerman, the world-renowned violinist, recently made what many considered racial comments during a master class at Julliard, telling two Asian sisters they needed to add more “soy sauce” to their playing. He went on to say that “Koreans don’t sing,” and when they told him they were also Japanese, he said, “Japanese don’t sing, either.” Do you get to a place in the world where you’re so sheltered, or so revered, that your life shuts out reality?
