Oscar Crawl #10: Train Dreams

Oscar Crawl #10: Train Dreams

Train Dreams is a relentlessly morose movie which pretends to be a study in classic American life in the early 20th Century, cutting lumber and building railroads. The protagonist is a solitary man who finds happiness with an outgoing woman and has a child with her. However, on one of his many excursions for months to work sawing trees, he returns to find his family killed by wildfires. The symbolism of Chinese laborers on the railroads being exploited and brutalized is a constant reminder as one of them keeps appearing as a symbolic conscience throughout. I found the film utterly pretentious. It is shot beautifully, the acting is very good, but it’s attempting to create some “lesson” or experiences that I find idiosyncratic of the director. As the end proceeds into an advancing 20th Century technology, it becomes even more obtuse.

Match Point: My wife couldn’t finish watching.
