Oscar Crawl #8: The Secret Agent

Oscar Crawl #8: The Secret Agent

This is Brazilian (with subtitles) about a politically dissenting professor trying to escape the 70s dictatorship. The film jumps around with flashbacks, and horrible violence in the streets. (I was in Brazil several times during that decade and of the 60+ countries I’ve been to that was the only place I was nearly mugged.) It’s a terribly slow film (almost three hours) and, while the director is lauded by some, I find it hugely self-indulgent. “Look what we can create, whether you understand it or not.”

The box office is far greater overseas than in the US. As in all the Oscar nominated films we’ve seen, the acting is terrific, but the plot and writing are pretty horrible and confusing. We wasted our time with this confusing jumble that desperately needed editing.
