Oscar Movie Crawl #3

Oscar Movie Crawl #3

Crawl onward: Sentimental Value is set in Norway and could win both international best film and film of the year. It won at Cannes. It's about an actor, his two daughters, their relationships and sadness, and an aspiring American actress looking for a serious film role. Like so many Scandinavian films, an actor staring into the distance for two minutes is considered great acting, while I think they have simply forgotten their lines. The reviews are very positive and it is modestly successful at the box office (it's foreign and uses subtitles!). Stellan Skarsgård is superb as a famed auteur who hasn't produced a film in a decade but has the perfect script now and wants his daughter, who's an actor with severe stage fright, in the lead. The ending of the film was a huge surprise to me and elevated me out of the Norwegian gloom.

Match Point: I liked it more than my wife, but there were dull stretches that tried to pass as deeply moving introspection. It is the best of the three we've seen thus far. Next: Frankenstein.
