Oscar Movie Crawl: One Battle After Another

Oscar Movie Crawl: One Battle After Another

My wife and I began our annual Oscar movie crawl last night after dinner with One Battle After Another. It's a dystopian film which (I think) attempts to show the endless struggles around power and revolutionary fervor with a rather unbelievable set of rebels readily taking over banks and other organizations (the black woman in the miniskirt walking on top of tellers' widows with a gun is named “Junglepussy”). Sean Penn is dreadful as a bizarre, malicious police/military type, and the entire proceedings are an excuse for explosions, car chases, and freeing illegal immigrants. The overtones for the Trump era might as well be subtitles, just in case you miss the innuendo. The revolutionary activities transcend generations. Leonardo DiCaprio was far more interesting freezing to death in Titanic.

This ridiculous mess is a big hit with the critics and artistic crowd (of course) and will win Oscars for some people most have never heard of. But it's a box office dud because most normal people can't understand a production that apparently exists just to demonstrate chaos. Oh, yeah: There are the obligatory white supremacy people with their secret organization. Ironically, they remind me more of Joe Biden than Donald Trump.

Match point: My wife and I agree.
