Reporting the Facts

The New York Daily News screamed that the horrible attack at the Annapolis Star was caused by right-wing extremism against the media. Sean Hannity, responding to the event, who is a conservative commentator, said that he predicted liberal Congressional Representative Maxine Waters would create extremism from the left with her reckless calls for action against President Trump. (He now denies this.)

The violence was apparently from a man who had a long standing grudge against the newspaper and who had filed defamation suits against it. No political connections have as yet been found. The paper reported he had harassed a former classmate.

This is yet another example of wild-assed speculation for one’s cause, irrespective of facts and civility. Both right and left are guilty of it, and it’s what happens when anyone thinks he or she is on a higher moral plane than everyone else. The tragedy of people murdered is turned into a fight song for one’s agenda.

As Eric Hoffer pointed out: A cause becomes a movement, which becomes an organization, which becomes a racket.
