The Critic

The Critic

We just got around to seeing Moonlight, the Oscar winning film, and I found it tedious and self-indulgent. It’s as if someone found unfinished notes and published them as a book, not bothering to make connections, meaning, or dramatic tension. I’m not sure how you write, direct, or act with such a total lack of energy or insight.

On another note, one of my former favorite TV shows, Homeland, has abundantly jumped the shark. This season’s arc ranged from the implausible to the laughable, with missing characters never explained (the president, the vice president elect, etc.). Claire Danes remains a superb actor, but the show’s shift from the Middle East to Washington has make it far less believable. How many gun battles do you have in the streets without anyone getting very upset about them?

Similarly, How to Get Away with Murder and The Walking Dead need to be put out of their misery, with ridiculous plots and characters who no one can possible care about at all. Everyone seems to love Viola Davis in everything lately, but watching her chomp on the scenery every week in Murder show is embarrassing. In Walking Dead, I root for the zombies.

I have become addicted to Colony, The Good Fight, and Grace and Frankie, the last of which has the incredible Jane Fonda, in her late 70s, actually demonstrating how to act.

Haven’t bothered with the others, but I’m definitely into Colony, whenever I can get it here in Oz.
