The Emotional/Intellectual Swinging Door

The Emotional/Intellectual Swinging Door

Logic engages us in thinking, while emotions engage us in action.

In a buyer’s office, you want to achieve an emotional connection with your help and advice, so that it’s not simply an intellectual game of chess. You need the buyer to understand and react to personal gains, improvements, and satisfaction that your intervention can provide.

However, when something unfortunate and unpleasant happens to you, personally, you need to escape the emotions and focus on the logical and rational. it’s fine to be upset, to feel angry, betrayed, mistreated, and unappreciated. But the question is what you do about it. When we act out of pure emotion, we tend to lash out in the moment, to “fight back.” That’s why there’s so much road rage with ensuing injury and even death. One person feels mistreated and insulted that they were cut off and immediately seeks “revenge” rather than thinking rationally that it probably wasn’t deliberate, that person himself or herself has done it accidentally in the past, and no real harm was done.

A lot of people extend this to “life rage” and are always angry and furious, ready to explode.

Influence others by appealing to their self-interests and emotions, but control yourself by calmly, rationally deciding what to do when you are challenged emotionally. Remember, it’s not about what happens to you, it’s what you do about it.
