The Platitudinous

The Platitudinous

Which of the following are actual quotes from famous authors, statesmen, or philosophers? (Answer far at the bottom.)

  1. To love one’s country demands the love of diversity.
  2. The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.
  3. Animals can be ruthless, but no one considers them to be criminals.
  4. Repent no more, you’re excusing the deed.
  5. The sea can’t be a woman, it is not sufficiently ruthless.
  6. We breathe the same air but do not exhale the same breath on our fellows.
  7. He was a candidate who could only win over the devil, and that’s who ran against him.
  8. Defining motivation is like defining energy: One has it or doesn’t.
  9. Top that hill, and find your future.
  10. Be not so quick to critique that your understanding has not yet arrived.

Only the second is an actual quote, by George Bernard Shaw. I made the rest up in 60 seconds looking at the ocean here in Nantucket. These are symbolic of the absolute, mindless crap we find on Facebook by people who are “inspired.’
