There Are Not Two Types of People

There Are Not Two Types of People

“There are only two kinds of people, the ones who (do this) and the ones who (do that).”

Fill in the blanks, or change “do” to “believe.”

The empirical evidence is that there are far more than two types of almost anything, from gender to hair color, from musical tastes to medical conditions. The reductionism that creates the “two kinds” mentality merely is a way of avoiding dealing with the vast diversity of life. People are too stressed or busy—or biased—to attempt it.

But there are not “those who attempt it and those who don’t”! We all try to deal with the diversity of life to varying degrees of success or failure. We are imperfect, but the best of us keep trying to understand and to improve.

If we allow the “two types” to prevail we wind up with…..polarization. You’re with us or you’re against us.

Oops.
