Watch Your Words

I was running a board meeting and asked how our “outreach committee” was doing. We provide free education, training, performances, and so forth to inner city schools and adults. It’s very popular and we’re trying to expand. We earn grants to help support the efforts.

I was told it’s now the “engagement committee” because “outreach” is out of favor. Who determined that and on what basis is beyond me. As long as we’re providing the support we’re intending I’m not going to argue about it.

Still, it’s like walking through a mine field. Some people just want to take shots at you no matter how much you’re trying to help. I imagine it was some professor sitting in quiet solitude up on the hill at Brown University, behind banning “outreach,” who calls Christmas Trees “Holiday Trees” and the Christmas Season “gift-giving season,” and Columbus Day…..

I doubt he or she is helping in any food bank or subsidizing tuition, or volunteering to teach for free.
