Once upon a time, we would look up facts. That seemed easier than ever with the advent of the internet, but the problem soon became obvious: The hunt for facts often turned up opinions. The opinions had to be recognized and then validated if they were to be used. So secondary and tertiary sources are nearly useless.

So we have to go back to finding the facts. And now it's harder than ever. Because even traditionally-respected news sources now mix fact and opinion with impunity in both print, electronic, and broadcast media.

And that's a fact.
