Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 08/02/2021
The Mayor of Providence, Jorge Elorza, has been vehement in calling for better, less confrontational police responsiveness, and more training in de-escalation of potential conflicts.
Recently, at a public event, the mayor aggressively approached the Governor, Dan McKee, shouting at him, because the latter signed a teachers’ union agreement the mayor had opposed. His Honor had to be physically restrained by the state trooper bodyguard of the governor.
Perhaps he had better attend those de-escalation classes?
I grew up with adults telling me, “Do what I say, not what I do,” to justify their hypocritical behavior. I shouldn’t pretend to be sick to avoid school, but teachers did it routinely. Try to actually talk to an executive in a “customer-driven company.” Do you really think you’re on hold for 20 minutes on call lines due to “unusual call volume” or because the company is simply saving money on staffing and would rather you go away?
The politicians aren’t waiting in line at TSA, they’re not fighting for seats at special events, they’re not paying parking tickets, and they’re not jumping through hoops to get bank loans. Maybe if they were, things would improve for everyone.
Unfortunately, “public service” has become hypocritical. It’s more about “self-service.”
A hypocrite is the kind of politician who would cut down a redwood tree, then mount the stump and make a speech for conservation. —Adlai Stevenson
Only crime and the criminal, it is true, confront us with the perplexity of radical evil; but only the hypocrite is really rotten to the core. —Hannah Arendt
Bill Clinton is not a hypocrite. If a man believes that it is just and moral to redistribute wealth, there is nothing hypocritical in his attempts to redistribute some of that wealth to himself. —P.J. O’Rourke
