“A priest and a bishop walk into a bar….” Well, they did last night, in “civilian clothes,” we know them both and chatted for a while. It’s not our uniforms (whether an admiral or a business executive), or our titles, or the initials after our names, that make us who we are. We’re all people, first.
It's common to sagely pronounce that we should treat others as we’d like to be treated. “Do unto others” is a principle cited in many religions, from Confucianism to Christianity. But an underlying issue here is: “How do you want to be treated?”
Is it a rather fugacious “be kind, be gentle, be polite, be considerate,” or should it be something more? For example, I want to be treated honestly. I’d like accurate feedback and facts when I ask for them. I don’t want to be inadvertently derailed by someone trying to make me feel good instead of helping me to perform better.
I want to be treated as someone who can earn your respect and trust, not as someone who demands it or whose connections demand it. I want to be treated as someone who has hit a triple, not someone born on third base.
And one more thing: Physical distance creates psychological distance. Treat me as someone who’s approachable, who has time for you, who is “near and not far.”
If that makes sense in how to treat me, then I know how to treat you.
