Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 10/18/2021
After driving from the Grand Canyon to Hoover Dam (one of the absolute highlights of the trip) we came to, as the bizarre flight attendants say, “our terminal descent”! We hit the Belaggio in Las Vegas for some extended R&R. If you’re reading this on Monday, we’ll be flying home tomorrow. We shared the trip with my daughter and one granddaughter, and they left Friday evening on the red-eye, and my son and his wife (with our third granddaughter due in December), and they’ll be driving back to LA tomorrow. Both great family time and private time.
Vegas is a unique place, and I’ve been to 63 countries and gambled everywhere from Macau to Estoril. Every demographic is represented here, everything is “over-the-top,” and the diversity of people is impressive. People often put casino chips in the church collection baskets, and on Mondays, the most junior cleric is assigned to cash them in at the casinos. Apparently, he’s known as the “chip monk.”
There is great beauty here and great slovenliness. There is some awful food and some of the best restaurants I’ve ever visited, over a couple of dozen trips going back to the 70s. (I actually heard the great Peter Drucker speak here once.) But this trip, I was just happy to see the parkour of the bustling streets, the people shouting in the sportsbooks, the filled restaurants, the bells and whistles on the casino floor, and the laughs in the comedy club.
About 70% of the people are obeying mask mandates (inside hotels and casinos and shows). The streets are jammed, traffic is its usual mess. My wife prevented my attempt to be arrested by two women in tiny bikinis with boots, police badges, police hats, and handcuffs. Too bad, it would have made for a great column,
But you’ll have to settle for this one. The Grand Canyon is two billion years old and a work of God and nature. Las Vegas is about 60 years old and a work of humans. I’m happy to be a part of both. Do you know why? Because it’s such a pleasure to see people here just enjoying themselves after the long, dismal trek we’ve survived. No matter what your entertainment preference, indulge yourself. You deserve it.
