Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 6/15/26

I’ve told people to stop “swinging for the fences” and just be content to hit the ball to try to get on base. My racquetball game improved hugely when I stopped trying to make every shot a “kill shot” (an unreturnable shot) and simply return the ball successfully while controlling the middle of the court (the “T”).

       I also was using volleyball as an analogy, telling people to just try to keep the ball alive over the net. But then I realized one day (watching women’s beach volleyball by pure accident) that the point in volleyball IS a good “kill shot”!

       Because serendipity is such a good teacher, I found my resolution when sitting on the beach on the Jersey Shore (Jersey has a “shore,” not “beaches”) and was becoming my often-waspish self as a mother and daughter were playing that game with paddles and a hard ball trying to keep it alive with the constantly annoying “whap, whap, whap.”

       But then I realized that this otherwise irritating game was intent on two people helping each other. The point was that both were successful the longer they kept the ball in the air. A “kill shot” here would be easy, since you’d simply need to hit the ball out of reach. However, what fun is that?

       It occurs to me that I’ve loved my coaching activities the most when I’m helping others to improve and we both can see and appreciate the improvement (which is why the corporate world of meetings and politics is so frustrating). My speaking is focused on the audience receiving benefits, not my receiving an ovation. And my writing is entirely centered on the readers gaining pragmatic skills to improve their work, relationships, and lives, not my name on best-seller lists. While I may make money doing this, I don’t do it simply for the money as attested to by the fact that I’ve turned down coaching, speaking, and writing requests that were purely mercenary in my view.

       Feel free to “swing for the fences” and pursue “kill shots” in your fun and games. After all, a successful chess game ends with your declaring “checkmate.” But I’ve found that can get boring, and helping someone else master chess never does.
