Marketing Preferences

If you want to market aggressively, focus on options which you’re good at and love doing. I’m a lousy networker (I’m prompted to say, “Why are you trying to talk to me?” at events, which is why I’ve never run for pubic office!) so I don’t network. But I can write and speak pretty well, so I focus on that. Consequently, marketing for me is never onerous.

There are five major routes to short-term marketing that I coach people about: referrals, speaking, writing, networking, hosting events. You don’t have to be good at or pursue all of them. But like flying a large plane, you can’t get by on just one engine, you need at least two or more.

Of course, if you don’t like any of the five, then there’s an answer to that, as well: Find another line of work.
