On the Beach

On the Beach

Early morning

I met a pelican on the beach this morning, whom I’m calling Claiborne Pelican, after our distinguished, late Rhode Island Senator, Claiborne Pell (of the Pell Grants). He sat on shore, eyed the surf, and quickly did an Olympic triple step to nail his food.

No 30-foot, neck-breaking dives for him. He sat on different parts of the beach and just hopped after his breakfast. He ate several times. When I snorkeled later to find out what he was eating, I found 6-9-inch silver fish, not a bad meal.

On to the next dish

Later, an Iguana appeared our of nowhere, whom I call Iggy. He crawled under the chaises and stole food. He didn’t scare easily, but when you got too close he raised up on his legs, like a hydraulic piston, and scrambled away with that drunken gait. I later found he had a harem of about six females close by under the palm trees.

He was becoming militantly romantic with one, thrashing about in the bushes, when two soccer moms, with small kids in tow, said, “Let’s go watch the lizards fight.”

“They’re iguanas,” I said, “and they’re not fighting.”

“Of course they are, look, one is on top of the other.”

“That’s NOT fighting.”

“OOOOHHHHHHH…… Kids! Don’t look at that!”
