The Donuts and the Dregs

The Donuts and the Dregs

A woman who once worked for me had a clever expression when she saw another woman dressed and groomed very well: “She’s done up like a donut.”

Last evening, in a very trendy Palm Beach restaurant (four Bentleys in casual sight in the parking lot where our limo dropped us), we sat with an unobstructed view of the entrance. During the course of our dinner we saw scores of well dressed, well coiffed women. A half-dozen of so were with men who had on torn jeans, dirty sneakers, and awful tee-shirts. These guys weren’t ripped or fit. They were simply slovenly.

What prompts a woman to spend time with a guy who doesn’t respect her enough to dress at least decently? These guys weren’t close to being dressed appropriately. I doubt these were all first dates, and some of the couples were probably married or living together. Their outfits weren’t “statements,” they were just uncaring—no respect for the environment, for others, or for the woman they were with.

Yeah, I know, today “anything goes.” But sometimes it goes too far.
