The Perceptual Recession

The Perceptual Recession

I’ve been telling consultants that this is largely a “perceptual recession,” and that stress is resulting from uncertainty, lack of trust in traditional people and institutions, and a feeling of powerlessness. I commend you to Daniel Gilbert’s piece today in the New York Times:

Alan, considering Gilbert’s claims, do you think, as consultants who regularly deal with ambiguity, have a role to help our clients navigate these uncertain waters? If so, what are some of the best things we can do for them?

Correction: “do we have a role . . . ” to help our clients?

Thanks, Alan. This is helpful because even today I had a discussion with my client about “survive” tactics for her business and “thrive” tactics for her business.

    Alan,
    Good article.

I’ve found that we are capable of creating an inner certainty and sense of personal peace even with external uncertainty.

We can use our minds to develop clarity of thought, solve problems in turbulent times, find joy everyday and help others do the same.

Just as there is an emotional contagion of fear and gloom, there can be an emotional contagion of appreciation and happiness.
