The Triumph of Means Over Ends (Bureaucracy)

The Triumph of Means Over Ends (Bureaucracy)

The State of Rhode Island informed me that I had a reconciliation of sales taxes to complete for 2016. Seems they either missed my filing or I missed the change from paper to their electronic filing. I owed no sales taxes. After three emails, two calls, and responses from two different (and very polite) agents in the excise tax office of the division of taxation, I was able to submit the forms (which are simply the total of the quarterly forms I had filed).

I’m guessing the state spent about a thousand bucks to collect zero money but to make sure that the forms were all in the proper place. From four years ago.

This is why no one needs a consulting degree, certification, anointment, license, or blessing to consult. You just need common sense.

Of course, that’s often rarer than the certifications, degrees, and so on….
